What Is a Pashmina?

A pashmina is a luxurious type of fine cashmere wool from the pashmina or changthangi goat in the Himalayan region. Known for their softness and warmth, pashmina shawls are popular for scarves, shawls, and wraps. The word "pashmina" originates from the Persian word "pashm," meaning wool. Highly prized for their quality, pashmina shawls are lightweight, warm, and a symbol of luxury and elegance, ideal for layering in cold weather.

How Is Pashmina Made?

The process of creating pashmina involves gathering this fine undercoat, which is combed out or collected during the molting season. Due to the small quantity of this fine fiber on each goat, it takes the wool from several goats to make a single pashmina shawl. Once collected, the pashmina fibre is cleaned, spun, and woven into various products such as shawls, scarves, and blankets.

The handcrafted nature of pashmina production makes it a time-consuming and labor-intensive process, resulting in high-quality and highly prized textiles. The intricate weaving techniques and skilled craftsmanship involved in creating pashmina items contribute to their reputation for being exceptionally soft, warm, and luxurious.
